Using Questions to Help Understanding

Today our AVID students puzzled over the riddle of the Harris Brothers, Mr. Taylor Harris and Mr. Trevor Harris.  Here’s what they were told:

  • Both men teach Humanities at Northeast Middle School.
  • Both look identical.
  • They were both born on the same day in the same year.
  • They both have the same birth parents.

But, they are not twins.  How can that be?

Our goal was to use riddles like this to prepare for the tutorial process.  Student presenters pondered over these types of questions as their teammates peppered them with questions.  We hoped to learn how to use questions to help presenters discover the answers without giving them the answers.  It’s one key to making tutorials work.
